Should I Add Collagen To My Diet? + A Yummy Collagen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Collagen is another one of those health foods that seem to be trending in the last 2-3 years but many people still don't really know what it is and how it may be beneficial to your health. I am going to break it down for you super simply so you can decide whether or not you want to jump on the collagen bandwagon.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein compound, made up of multiple beneficial proteins such as glycine, arginine, and proline. It is found in the connective tissue of all animals. It is the most abundant protein in our bodies, and as such, our collagen takes one of the bigger hits as we age, slowing down production while external and environmental factors simultaneously deplete it. This is when we start to see wrinkles, joint pain and other bodily deteriorations where collagen used to keep us plump, hydrated and strong.

What are the benefits of adding Collagen to my diet?

Although there is still a lot of research that needs to be done on this topic, people use collagen to support the following things:

  • increase mass and muscle repair
  • help support lining in the gastrointestinal tract
  • improve stiffness in joints
  • boost energy
  • support bone health
  • have you ever noticed it as an ingredient on an ingredients list?! That's because it can also help with wrinkles, elasticity, repair, and smoothness
  • strengthens hair, nails and teeth

What are the different types? The most well-known type of collagen is beef collagen also referred to as bovine collagen but there is also chicken collagen, fish/marine collagen (also common), and others.

How do I use it? Collagen doesn't really have a taste. It blends really well into smoothies, shakes, and lattes. You can also add it to baking recipes, pancakes, jellos and more!
