How to support your body while taking medication

Wondering how to support your body while taking medication? Although in holistic nutrition we are all for preventative health measures and choosing natural when we can, sometimes medications are 100% necessary. It is also important to note that you have to do what is best for YOU and make choices that you are comfortable with.

Yes, certain medications may have been pushed more than necessary over the years but at the same time medications can be extremely helpful (while also being life-saving).

So if you do have to take medication short or long-term you can always support your body while taking them.

However, it's extremely important to note that even some natural micronutrients and herbs can actually interfere with the effectiveness of certain medications so always be sure to speak with your doctor before taking any supplement or herbal products. This even includes things like homemade tinctures and herbal teas.

Now with any medication, your liver may have to do some extra work. Our liver is super smart and does help get rid of toxins but with that being said, since we are constantly being bombarded with toxins, it can be helpful to give our liver some extra love.

Some ways you can support your liver is by eating:

  • Berries
  • Beets
  • Cruciferous veggies
  • Green tea
  • Bitter greens
  • Lemon
  • Healthy sources of fats (i.e. salmon, nuts, seeds)
  • And overall a well balanced, whole foods diets

It is also recommended that you work on reducing your toxic load in other areas of your life such as personal care and cleaning products. You can also introduce more organic produce if that is an option for you.

You can also take supplements such as a B-Complex and NAC but again, be sure there are no contradictions with your medication!

Now, you can also do research and see if the medication you take depletes and nutrients in particular.

A classic example is the hormonal birth control pill which is known to deplete B vitamins among others. If you are on the hormonal birth control pill, one thing that may be beneficial is eating more vitamin B-rich foods and/or supplementing with vitamin B.

Vitamin B rich foods include:

  • Eggs
  • Red meat
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Whole grains
  • Beans

Next, some medications can cause side effects such as constipation but pooping every day is important in order to get rid of toxins! So if you can focus on hydration, fiber, whole foods, and even supplementing with magnesium (citrate or bisglycinate), it may support more regular bowel movements.

I also wrote a post a couple of weeks back focusing on inflammation in the body so you can always support your body by following some of those recommendations as well.

Of course, I can’t go over every medication but the last example I want to cover is antibiotics. Yes, over the years there has been antibiotic abuse but they can also be very important and sometimes a necessity!

If you have to take an antibiotic for any given period of time, things you can do are:

  • continuing eating a healthy diet
  • incorporating more fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, coconut yogurt) which are filled with beneficial bacteria
  • adding in probiotic and eating prebiotic-rich food (asparagus, onion, garlic, leeks, dandelion greens, chicory root, etc)
  • Follow the liver supporting recommendations above

Some of my favorite probiotics are:

  • Cyto-Matrix Multistrain
  • ProbioMax Daily DF
  • HMF Multistrain

So remember, although we want to support our bodies through nourishing food, movement and mindset work, sometimes we need the support of western medicine as well. It’s all about making informed decisions and providing our bodies with some extra support when needed!
